Regions and Fields: What Should You Know
by Valerie Hymas, Program Manager--Europe & Eurasia

Candidates applying in the creative and performing arts need to make sure to be fully aware of the way in which these applications are screened.† Except for Creative Writing, Ethnomusicology, and Architecture, the screening committees do not read the applications before coming to IIE on the day of reviewing the arts supplementary materials. They often skim through the applications during the day, but rarely have time to read every application in detail. Therefore, they are mainly using the supplementary materials submitted by arts applicants to determine if a project should be recommended to a host country for final consideration.† Therefore, applicants in the creative and performing arts must be sure to summit the highest quality supplementary materials which demonstrate their ability to undertake their project.† If an application in the arts is recommended to a host country, then an in-country supervising agency will review the paper applications of art applicants in their entirety.† Therefore, both supplementary materials and paper applications are of equal importance to an applicantís success.

One of the main goals of the Fulbright program is to offer a chance for an international experience to Americans who have not yet had such an opportunity.† However, there are many regions of the world where the standard of living requires a great deal of flexibility, an open mind, and a sense of adventure from the prospective applicant.† Therefore, applicants must consider carefully if they are capable of adapting to the new lifestyle when choosing a region in which to base their Fulbright project.† Our committees are looking for applicants who have the skills and cultural sensitivity to easily adapt to living and studying in a new environment.† Discuss the skills that you have for cultural adjustment in your application.

There are areas of the world not safe for American students, and there may be limitations on where a grantee can go within a country while on a Fulbright.† If you feel that you may need to conduct research in a region where Americans are advised not to travel then you should contact the appropriate regionís Program Manager to determine if this would be possible.† If Fulbright prohibits travel to this area, your project is not feasible.† It would be better for you to know this in advance so that you are able to make the necessary adjustments to your project before submitting the application.

The Fulbright program encourages applications in all fields of study.† Applicants in professional fields, such as law, journalism, business and medicine are more than welcome to apply. These applicants may also find special opportunities in these fields, including the Fulbright International MBA awards and the Fulbright Professional grants in Journalism both offered by the Fulbright Commission in Spain.† In addition, the Bi-national Business grants to Mexico offer opportunities for young professionals.

Applicants proposing projects to the United Kingdom should note that this countryís competition includes: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.† There are no award quotas for each of these countries, and applicants for any of the individual countries within the UK are all competing together in the overall UK competition.† In addition, applicants for the Republic of Ireland should make sure that their projects are solely for study in the Republic of Ireland, and do not include study/research at any institution within Northern Ireland.†Applicants for Northern Ireland must apply to the United Kingdom.
