How to Select Your Field of Proposed Study
by Jonathan Akeley & Walter Jackson, Program Managers
Applicants should select the Field of Proposed Study, from the on-line application drop-down table, that best describes the main topics being proposed for their study or research project. The Field of Proposed Study does not necessarily have to be the same as your undergraduate major. The vast majority of Ph.D. applicants select the same Field of Proposed Study as the graduate program in which they are currently enrolled. However, if you are selecting a Field of Proposed Study other than that of your doctoral degree, your project proposal should address your interest in conducting research in an area that differs from that of your dissertation. All applicants who are applying for English Teaching Assistant awards must select Teaching English as a Second Language as their Field of Proposed Study. Teaching Assistantships are only available to selected countries. Please make sure that the country you have selected has an English Teaching Assistantship Program, or your application will not be considered. A list of available countries is on-line at www.iie.org/fulbright/us in the ìFulbright Grant Opportuntiesî section. All applicants in the Creative and Performing Arts, including Architecture, Creative Writing, and Ethnomusicology must select only one of the Fulbright Fields of Proposed Study. You should select the arts project medium that best represents the major focus of your project. All arts projects must conform to one of the listed Fields of Proposed Study in the arts, since National Screening Committees that are specific to the Fields of Proposed Study will review applications in these fields. For example, a committee of painters will review an applicant who selects Painting/Printmaking as the Field of Proposed Study; a committee of writers will review an applicant who selects Creative Writing as the Field of Proposed Study, etc. Please pay close attention to the Instructions for Submitting Material in the Creative & Performing Arts. Special Considerations For Students Applying for Islamic Civilization Initiative Awards Applicants who are applying for Islamic Civilization grants should follow the same guidelines as students applying for the other Fulbright Full Grants. So if the Fulbright project proposal is to study Islamic banking practices, for instance, then the Field of Proposed Study should be something like Business & Management. The Field of Proposed Study for Islamic Civilization Awards does NOT have to be Islamic Studies. All applicants for Islamic Civilization grants need to identify their applications for this program by handwriting ìIslamic Civilizationî on the final hard copy applications. ìIslamic Civilizationî should be noted under the Country of Application sections on pages 1 and 5. Please note that each Islamic Civilization Initiative applicant must also submit an ìIslamic Civilization Outreach Plan,î which is available on-line at www.iie.org/fulbright/us in the ìApplication Centerî section. For students applying for the Bi-national Business Grants to Mexico or for Fulbright International MBA Awards at Instituto de Empresa in Spain : All applicants for these grants need to identify their applications for these programs by handwriting either ìBi-national Business Grantî (for Mexico) or ìInstituto de Empresaî (for Spain) on the final hard copy applications. ìBi-national Business Grantî or ìInstituto de Empresaî should be noted under the Country of Application sections on pages 1 and 5. For students applying for institution-specific, co-funded awards to the United Kingdom : Each applicant for these grants needs to identify their application for these programs by handwriting the name of the British college or University on the final hard copy application. The name of the college or university should be noted under the Country of Application sections on pages 1 and 5.
