Common Questions on Applying for Fulbright
by IIE

The country that I wish to apply to is not listed. Can I still apply for this country?

In most cases, the answer is NO.† Many countries do not participate in the Fulbright program so it is not possible to accept an application for one of these countries. However, if you are a PhD candidate we may be able to consider your application to non-listed countries in some rare instances. You are welcome to contact the Program Manager in charge of the appropriate region to enquire about the possibility of proposing a project to a non-listed country. Again, this is open to PhD candidates proposing advanced research only.

Am I still competitive as a graduating senior?
Although some countries state a preference for graduate students, graduating seniors are welcome to apply to any country and are usually very competitive.  What these countries really want are candidates who are capable of working independently, regardless of academic level.
Can I apply to Switzerland with only a BA?

Graduating seniors may certainly apply for a Fulbright grant to Switzerland. It is true that without a master degree, BA only holders are not eligible to receive a Fulbright/Swiss Government grant.† However, they are eligible to receive one of the Seydel fellowships to Switzerland which are generally supplemented with a Fulbright Travel award. In addition to the Seydel awards there are other funding sources which can be used to award graduating seniors grants to study in Switzerland. (For more FAQs)
