Guidelines for Fulbright Competition - Spring 2007

by IIE Staff

We are very pleased to announce two new opportunities that have become available for U.S. Students to study abroad during the 2007-08 academic year. Descriptions of each are listed below.

We recognize that students who applied in the first round of screenings might be interested in applying for one of these new awards. They are free to do so, with the following caveats:

1. Anyone who has been recommended for an award in the traditional competition, just closed, who wishes to apply for one of the new grants must IMMEDIATELY withdraw his/her application from the country to which they have been recommended. There will be no further notification on these awards until after the March 15th deadline.

2. Students applying for the Italian Teaching Assistantships, who may have applied in the October competition to another country, must document their Italian language capabilities, and submit a revised Statement of Proposed Study.

3. Students who are applying for the Fulbright-NAF award, who may have applied to another country with a similar project, must submit a revised Statement of Proposed Study for affiliation with the Delft University of Technology.

4. Please click here to view the award descriptions.

5. Please click here to begin the Spring Application.

We are not requiring FPAs to complete Campus Committee Evaluation Forms, given the short time between the announcement and the deadline.

We recognize that there will be questions. Please feel free to contact us, as needed.

As always, we appreciate your help and cooperation.

15 Fulbright Teaching Assistantships to Italy (Deadline: March 15, 2007)

by IIE Staff

The Fulbright Teaching Assistantship Program aims to strengthen English language instruction at Italian educational institutions by establishing a native speaker presence, which will provide part-time assistance (between 12 and 16 teaching hours per week) to permanent teaching staff. U.S. participants will also simultaneously gain from intensive cross-cultural interaction and international educational and/or research opportunities at Italian institutions.

Language A good knowledge of Italian is strongly recommended; basic facility in Italian is required. Successful candidates must be articulate native-English speakers.

Academic year
Mid-September to the end of May.

Grant period
9 Months (grant dates must correspond to the school year in Italy). Fulbright Teaching Assistants will be required to participate in a one-to-two day orientation program organized by the Fulbright Commission in italy in mid-September.

Candidate profile
Applications are welcome from graduating seniors who possess the initiative to assist in teaching English language and American studies to Italian students in elementary or high schools.

Affiliation
The Fulbright Commission in Italy will match the grantee with the appropriate educational institution. Details of assignments will be subject to communication between the Fulbright Commission and the school and based on the academic profile of the selected candidate, the school’s needs, and the grantee’s research or study requirements.

General comments
Applicants should submit detailed descriptions of their study or career interests and also include well-thought out and feasible project proposals. In addition to their Teaching Assistant activities, grantees may enroll in academic courses each semester, if the regional assignment permits such activity, or engage in independent research related to their fields of study. These activities, combined with the Teaching Assistant (TA) responsibilities, will comprise a full-time program.

Each host institution will tailor the assistantship to its language teaching needs and the grantee’s background, academic interests, and abilities. TA activities may include:

  • Serving as resource persons in conversation groups;
  • Providing small group tutorials;
  • Serving as attendants in language laboratories;
  • Giving talks related to American studies in English classes or civic/school organizations;
  • Home-stays with Italian families.

2 Fulbright/NAF Fellowships in Water Management (Deadline March 15, 2007)

by IIE Staff

As part of its mission to initiate and support educational exchange programs between the United States and the Netherlands, the Netherland-America Foundation (NAF) has established Fulbright / NAF Fellowships in Water Management Fulbright Fellowships in response to the devastation of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina. Given its unique geographic position (with roughly 50% of its territory below sea level), the Netherlands can provide significant insight into relevant water management issues, while also gaining benefit of United States viewpoints and expertise through the exchange.

Language: A working knowledge of Dutch is useful at the time of arrival in the Netherlands.

Academic year: September through May.

Grant period/duration: 9 months. Grants must start September 1.

Candidate profile: Candidates at all degree levels are considered. Applicants will already have attained their undergraduate core technical skills, but will want to complement these with a graduate multidisciplinary study of water management aspects, such as:

  1. Assessment of flooding risks, (e.g., determining acceptable flooding risks in relation to other natural disasters; distributing risks to minimize damage; effects of climate change; assessing economic, social, environmental, and/or cultural damages using studies conducted by insurance companies; insurability).
  2. Spatial planning in flood-prone areas, (e.g., the use of simulation hydraulic modeling tools applied to complicated interdependent resource management choices).
  3. Mitigating flood impact, (e.g., influence land development of flood-prone areas through legislation; development of evacuation plans and disaster management).

Factors affecting eligibility: U.S. students currently residing in the Netherlands will not be considered.

Affiliation: Fellowship recipients will be placed at the Water Research Centre at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, one of the most advanced centers for water management studies in the world. See www.tudelft.nl for additional information.

Dependents No dependent allowance is available.

Recommendation Notification

by IIE Staff

On January 31, 2007, letters will be sent to all 2007-08 applicants for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program notifying them of their application status following the National Screening Committee review (see instructions below). In the past, IIE has sent these results to FPAs by mail. However, this year, FPAs may go to the Princeton Review Application Manager system to view these results. IIE will not be mailing them to FPAs.

Please remember, a notification of recommendation implies the applicant will receive further consideration by the host country, the FSB and the Department of State. The notification should not be regarded as an award letter.

Since recommendation, as noted by Recommended in the Status column, for an award is not assurance of receipt of a grant, please do not release the names of recommended students to the campus press, colleagues or other individuals, until official notification is received from IIE on the final outcome of the student applications. This notification may not be until mid-summer, in some cases.

Non-Recommended in the Status column means an applicant is no longer under consideration.

The Princeton Review Application Manager will be open to FPAs for viewing the status of 2007-08 applicants from January 30 to February 17, 2007. To view the list of applicants from your institution, please follow the below instructions:

1. Go to the website: https://embark.princetonreview.com/

2. Sign in using your institution User ID and password [If you have forgotten your log in information, please contact Walter Jackson].

3. Click on APPLICATIONS (lower left-hand corner or from the toolbar at the top).

4. Click on MANAGE (green button in the middle of the page).

5. You have READ-only permission. Your screen view should be set to FPA Default. This will allow you to see a list of students from your institution followed by their status, either Recommended or Non- Recommended. A few students who withdrew or who were ineligible may have –none- or Non-Recommended indicated in the status column.

You will have access to the Application Manager system from January 30 to February 17, 2007. On February 17, you will no longer have access to the 2007 applications.

The success of these award programs is due in great part to the efforts and interest of the Fulbright Program Adviser and we would, therefore, like to take this opportunity to thank you for the considerable time and work that you have contributed.
